FICA Tax in 2023-2024: What Small Businesses Need to Know

The term “legal holiday” means any legal holiday in the District of Columbia. For purposes of the deposit rules, the term “legal holiday” doesn’t include other statewide legal holidays. When something impacts your personal finances, that’s when paying FICA taxes will make more sense. FICA taxes are a separate tax from your federal income tax. FICA taxes are 15.3% for all workers, both those with an employer and those who are self-employed workers. If an employee overpays, the IRS will know because both employers’ withholding has submitted the tax amounts.

If you need to correct a Form W-2AS, W-2CM, W-2GU, or W-2VI after you’ve sent Copy A to the SSA, use Form W-2c. Send Copy A with Form W-3c, Transmittal of Corrected Wage and Tax Statements, to the SSA at the address shown on Form W-3c. You may request a waiver from filing electronically on Form 8508. Exemptions From Social Security Taxes

If you’re correcting underreported tax, you must file Form 941-X or Form 944-X by the due date of the return for the return period in which you discovered the error and pay the amount you owe by the time you file. If an employee reaches the $200,000 threshold, then an additional 0.9% is withheld in Additional Medicare Tax. Higher-wage earners pay what’s called an Additional Medicare Tax. This threshold number of paying more changes yearly, like the FICA limit with Social Security. Although the rate can be set annually, it has remained mostly stable since 1990.
